The Texture Of Things

Conversation in a Bathtub,
Tuesday Morning

November 6th, 2007

“Telly! Telly! It’s me, Ernie. Are you ready for some football?”

“No. I’m swimming right now.”

“Oh. Okay. Tell me when you’re ready for some football.”

I just love football season.

I use to swim in the bathtub when I was a kid. We had one of those eagle claw and ball bathtubs that held about 4,000 gallons of water, and when it was filled to the top I could swim (actually float) on top or under the water. I had a flotilla of boats and submarines to play with, and my baths would take about an hour. Now I just shower with nothing to play with. Well, almost nothing!

Geez, coffeypot, you had the small tub, didn’t you?

Sometimes I get all wistful and think apocalyptic thoughts (or at least end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it) about the future. When the tot’s children, if she has any, are 3 or 4, will the state of water conservation be such that baths are altogether discouraged? And if they are, what a sad loss. There is so much fun to be had in the bathtub, even before, um, self discovery. 😉
