The Texture Of Things

November 19th, 2007

The tot has recently started saying “amn’t,” as in “No, I amn’t.”

And I like the sound of it so much I think about using it myself.

When she first started saying that, I had to struggle to think of a way to “correct” her. I ended up explaining it in a long-winded way that bored her (and surely caused her to miss the point ), but that’s fine…. I’m not sure I wanted her to *be* corrected…. but at least I feel like I did something… 😉

I amn’t surprised. Kid can use the words they hear in a way that makes more sense than the real word.

Yeah, that’s a good one. I also get “I’m is!” all the time. For example, I tell the children to sit down, and finish their work, and I get one particular child who likes to stare off into space. when I remind him to work, and not zone out on me, he always says, “I’m is!” I tell him. “No, you’m isn’t!”

I can just see her now, with her jazz hands, and her “amn’t”! 🙂 Cute, cute, cute!
